The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India's highest award in cinema given annually by the Government of India for life time contribution to Indian cinema. It was instituted in 1969 in the name of Phalke ,the father of Indian cinema. The award, consisting of a Swarn Kamal, a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh and a shawl, is given for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema by the I&B ministry.Great names like Satyajit Ray,Shantaram,Raj Kapoor,Lata Manegeshkar ,Mrinal sen,Shyam Benegal and Adoor Gopalakrishnan have also won this award. It is heartening to note KB's name will also figure among the all time great winners of the award.Though belated ,he deserves all the Kudos.KB ushered in a new era in Tamil films by pushing melodrama to the backseat that was prevalent at that time.He is surely one among the the most notable trend setters of Indian film industry. It is no surprise, even today his teleserials are popular in TV.In a career spannng close to half a century, he has been instrumental in giving a career launch pad to many budding talents in the industry in his times. It is no wonder KB himself said what is most satisfying to him is that he was a mentor to several actors and technicians.I hope this national recogonition will make KB to come out of his hibernation mode and make some more outstanding movies.
