Encouraged by the page views and response I got for my English translation of Bharathi's Aathi chudi, I have yet again made an humble attempt to translate immortal Tamil poetess Avvaiyar's pioneer work on Athichudi to English. Avvaiyar was a great Tamil poet who lived between 13th century .Avvaiyars 'Aathichudi' in Tamil is a great literary work aimed at educating the children. Even after a millennium these are relevant today and taught to millions of Tamil Children all over the world. I consider Avvaiyaar as the world's first pedagogue .Apart from Aathi chudi Avvaiyaar wrote 'Kontrai venthan ' also a moral code of the highest order aimed at educating children.Other works of Avvaiyar are Moothurai and Nalvazhi . I have plans to translate these works also to English soon.
As is the wont, Avvaiyar begins with a couplet to invoke Lord Ganesha .
ஆத்தி சூடி அமர்ந்த தேவனை
ஏத்தி ஏத்தித் தொழுவோம் யாமே
I also invoke Lord Ganesha's blessings for my humble effort to translate a great literary work .
Aathi flowers decked Shiva ..
adores Ganesha,let's invoke His grace .
Note : Athi is a mountain orchid flower (Bauhinia).Lord Shiva loves to be adorned with garlands made of Athi flowers .
