Caste Census -Will it be detrimental or benificial ?

The union government has decided to go ahead with the caste based census, succumbing to pressure from most of the political parties.Could there be repurcussions ? Will it be detrimental or beneficial to the nation ?.Those who argue in favour of a caste census feels a caste based census would help to uplift the underprivileged. Those who are against a caste based census  feel we already have a divided society based on caste.A caste census would complicate, confound and bedevil the existing caste disparities.India is known for its castes, sub castes, sects and sub sects .The divide could become more rife and become increasingly sectarian. It must be borne in mind that as early as 1901 the Britishers did try for a caste based survey .They listed out 1000 odd castes .But at the end of the survey they realised there are more than 4000 castes .Again another caste based census was taken in 1931.That was the last occasion a caste based census was taken in the country .The British government stopped caste based survey because it was discriminatory .After 79 years, where is the need for a caste based census now, is the question posed by those who are against the survey .Some people believe, to create a casteless society a clear picture of the caste divide is required, so that the weaker ones can be given a thrust.I feel though it sounds a bit ironical, technically it is correct. The bureaucrats apprehend the politicians could use the caste data for profiling a caste regionwise to suit their vote bank politics.Unfortunatley politics in our country is divisive ,religion and caste based .That explains why the government has buckled to the pressure exerted by some political parties who want a caste based census.Once the census is over, there could be demands to revise the reservation limits beyond the current 50 percent. There could be opposition to this upward revision by another group .Will it not disrupt harmony in the nation over a cast based issue ? I liked the way the CII chief reacted to the caste based census. He said the industry and the corporate world are caste blind. I wish our poiticians and political parties also become caste blind. The courts of the country have often said a realistic reservation quota can be fixed only on the basis of caste based data. All said and done caste system in India is a social reality.Keeping caste out of the census does not wipe out caste in society is a fact .One sincerley hopes the outcome of the caste census should not and does not create new divides and issues in the social fabric of the nation.
