Mango people of a banana republic

Of late Mango and Banana are two frequently used words  in the print media and visual media.People of India were called 'Mango people' by Robert Vadra. In his attempt to mock at Kejriwal, who leveled serious improprieties in a land deal involving Vadra  and realtor DLF, Vadra called people of India 'mango people' .He also found it fit to call our nation a 'banana republic'. Mango people is a literal translation of the Hindi phrase "aam admi". Aam Admi means common man. But 'aam' also means mango in Hindi. So 'mango people' is a pun on the common man of India. Incidentally Mango is our national fruit. So our  political class think it is  apt to dub the common man derisively as 'mango people'.

Furthermore the English word 'mango' has originated from the Tamil word 'Mangai'. So mango has some strange connection with India and its people.Another strange coincidence is the usage of the phrase 'mangai madayarkal' in Tamil. 'Madayarkal' means fools in Tamil. For some strange reason fools of the first order are mockingly called 'mangai madayarkal' in Tamil. There seems to be some  connection with fools and mango. So it is no surprise our incorrigible politicians think it fit to call the common man, aam admi implying they are fools.Mango is the national fruit for Pakistan and Philippines too .I am eager to know if their poilitcians call their nationals as mango people ! Mango is the national tree for Bangladesh too.Perhaps politicians from these countries also can take a cue from our political leaders.

Robert Vadra found it fit to call India a banana republic when his mother in law Sonia Gandhi is the chairperson of the ruling UPA. A country operated like a commercial enterprise for private profit is normally referred to as a banana republic.Probably the huge scams that have come to light recently and the money made by many might have prompted him to call India a banana republic unwittingly. Banana republic also refers to a country where the poverty stricken working class is ruled by wealthy political class.Unwittingly he has divulged the truth.

A senior union minister of the congress is alleged to have peculated funds meant for disabled, those in authority  make crores in coal mining deals, natural resources like granites, sand, coal and non renewable resource like spectrum are misused to amass wealth by a select few. When all these happen around him,the PM wisecracks 'money does not grow in trees'. No doubt we are a banana republic and our people are mango people.

  2. @Anonymous - Sashi Tharoor is an elitist crook, however the 'Cattle Class' comment was a misunderstanding.
